“On February 18, 2019,, Charles “Chucks” life took an unexpected turn. Chuck, a father of three and avid outdoorsman, was riding a motorcycle while on holidays in Italy when he was suddenly cut off by a car. He tried to avoid a collision, but an impact was inevitable. The collision ended up breaking his tibia and fibula in both legs, as well three ribs and puncturing a lung. He recalled being thrown off the bike quite a distance……. “When I landed, all I recall is that I tried but I couldn’t move. I tried to move my feet, but they were flapping uselessly, and the pain was overwhelming.
A witness managed to call for help and before long an ambulance was rushing Chuck to Cesena for emergency surgery to stabilize the damage to his lungs and broken legs. Eight days later, an orthopaedic surgeon at the Misericordia hospital in Edmonton operated on him again to repair and fix the fractured tibia and fibula in both legs. He was fitted with an external fixator that had to be adjusted daily in his left leg where the damage was more severe. Unfortunately, nine months later, X-rays revealed that neither tibia was healing properly.
Chuck’s continued immobility and pain were impacting both his business life (Owned a small accounting firm) and his personal life. “Not only was my business slowing down but I also had rely on my wife and other family members to support me physically,” recalled Chuck. “it was an extremely difficult time. I’m a proud man who loves to be outdoors and is used to being active.”
After performing bone graft procedures on both of Chuck’s legs, the surgeon decided to use a Melmak device on Chuck’s tibia to stimulate healing. Chuck was eager to try and do anything to help heal his bones and since this was the result of a car accident, despite being out of country, his insurance covered the cost of the device.
Chuck continued to follow the program of adjusting the frame on his leg as well as now using Melmak daily. He soon noticed that the adjustments were more difficult to make and after getting X-rays it was confirmed that the bone had almost completely healed. The accelerated healing allowed Chuck’s external fixator to be removed weeks before expected. Chuck continued to use the Melmak and was soon able to begin rehabilitating his muscles and tendons, much earlier than expected. After some hard work, Chuck was back to work and back to the outdoors and could not be happier. He also decided to put the motorcycle to rest, at least for now. His latest accomplishment was climbing Ha Ling in Canmore, AB.”
