“I will never forget this day in April 2016. I was 68 years old, the sun was shining, and my best friend of 50 years and I were getting ready for a beautiful afternoon of skiing at Lake Louise. The morning had been a little icy, so we were extremely happy for the sun and the softened snow. It was our second run and somehow my leg must have slipped on some ice and I fell hard onto my ski with my hip after crashing onto what felt like cement. The pain was excruciating, and I knew right away that the injury was quite severe, I also knew that I had likely broken my hip, which at my age was not ideal.

I was extremely fortunate that my friend was a physician and I was immediately rushed to the hospital in Banff. Once there, the Orthopedic surgeon on call discovered I had a compound fracture in my right leg. Everyone around me remained calm the whole time and made sure that I stayed calm too as they prepared me for the impending surgery. The surgery went well, however, my age and the location of the fracture were still of concern.

After the incident, I really did not know when or if I would ever be able to ski again, and boy do I love to ski. At first, I was told I may never ski again, but with the help of Dr. M, my amazing rehab team and the Melmak bone stimulator I was able to return to the slopes in April 2017. I am so grateful to Dr. M for doing everything in his power to get me skiing again.
